Agent Tips:

Finding a good agent, is like finding a good real estate agent… not easy! Here are some general tips and a list of Victoria’s current agencies.

Research the agency and the rep to find out which actors are on their books that you may know and can ask intelligent questions.
Jump onto IMDBpro and look for up and coming Australian actors and see which agents currently represent them.
You are interviewing them, they are not interviewing you.
You will be in a relationship with your agent for many years, so make sure you like them!
Check their percentage take, industry standard sits around 10%
Ask them how many people they have on their books and how long they have been operating. You want an agency that is well established and has a reputation with casting agencies.
Find out their business philosophy and where they invision you in the industry ie- Film, TV, Theater.
Don’t do a “hard sell”, if you wreak of desperation the bad companies will rip you off and the good ones will reject you.
You want agents to think of you as much as possible, so find common ground and be their friend!

Please investigate the following in your search for an agent:

Trust account – does the agent have an account that your money goes into that is separate from the ‘everyday’ expenses account?

Commission – check carefully what percentage of your income the agent will take. In Victoria it varies from 10% to 25%, but there are no rules

Does the agent charge upfront or any sort of on-going fees. How much are they and what will the fees cover? Check what expenses/charges you may be expected to meet.

Is there a contract that the agent wants you to sign?

You may want to ask some of the following questions:

How will you promote me?
How will you get me work?
How many clients do you have?
What films / television shows / commercials / theatre have your clients done recently?
(if extras agent) For what films / television shows / (commercials) have you provided extras?
